A synthetic tracing of the history of the Italian karate during last thirty years cannot prescind from the acronyms of the Federations that have been alternated during this time. It's necessary however that the data of which we will speak remain as future testimony of the events that have taken place in Italy and of the process for the acknowledgment and unification of the karate that, till today, still it is not concluded.
Naturally, in order not to bore the reader too much, we will speak exclusively about the more meaningful Organizations remembering that, parallel, proliferate Associations and consisting Groups more or less. 1966 saw two Organizations: the FIK (Italian Federation Karate) with center to Rome and AIK (Italian Association Karate) with center to Milan. Before (the FIK) was been born some year before on initiative of some practicing of the Tuscany, second (the AIK) was founded to Milan from a group of students of Master Hiroshi Shirai that reached Italy the previous year.
AIK then has transformed in FESIKA (Sport Federation Italian Karate) in 1970, appointing as President the Dottor Giacomo Zoja.In 1979, on pressure of the CONI, with the promise of karate official acknowledgment of an independent Federation, the two Organizations have joined toghether giving life to FIKDA (Italian Federation Karate and Analogous Discipline), become FIKTEDA (Italian Federation Karate Analogous Taekwondo and Discipline) in 1982 with the entry of taekwondo. All it seemed completed, even if the acknowledgment from CONI was not yet given and not coming yet, when in 1985, after Elective Federal Conference, Italian Federation saw to prevail the will of the majority of the Society instead of impositions of the FILPJ (Fight Judo Weights), of which FIKTEDA was Associated Discipline, the taekwondo Italian Federation Taekwondo has been separated founding the FITA (Taekwondo Italian Federation). Some months later also a group of Society of karate associated to FIKTEDA passed to the FITA that changed therefore its own denomination in FITAK. On pressure of the CONI and the FILPJ, always with the promise of the official acknowledgment of the karate, the FIKTEDA, for the good of the Italina karate, in the 1987 has been melted in order to meet in the FITAK. At this stage a short parenthesis is necessary to get better understanding. From 1970, in Europe in particular, it was developing karate with more and more sport connotations, very far from original principle of karate. This "European Karate" was calling itself "modern" or "sportsman" in order to diversufy itself from the karate historically known that it has been handed on from Japanese Masters and that today comes defined "traditional" or "classic".
This dualism was found again naturally also between practicing, some of them most inclined ones to the practical of the traditional karate and others oriented to the"modern" karate. Returning to our history it is important to emphasize that the premises and promises for unification with FITAK were of wide autonomy of the two members of the karate even tough menbers of only one Organism. Unfortunately such promises have been completely disregarded much to force the Societies of karate traditional to discharge itself in putting (beyond 400 Societies that they represented approximately 50% of the affiliated Societies) for giving life, in 1989, to the FIKTA (Italian Federation Traditional Karate and Analogous Disciplines). The situation today sees the group of karate of the FITAK placed in the FILPJ like 4th sector (FITAK=FITA and FILPJ=FILPJK) while it continues the job of the traditional karate with the FIKTA affiliated in International field to the ITKF (International Traditional Karate Federation).
