If a time there was the karate, why speaking of traditional karate?

A cura del M° Luciano Puricelli

The Teacher H. Nishiyama and with him the Teacher H. Shirai they have been forced to redefine the Karate ITKF, that had learned from their teachers and that they keep on spreading and to practise, with name of Traditional karate.

Why? Because the name karate was inflated, from a whole karate: modern karate, sporting karate, karate full contact, light contact and clever variations, so much that in this mélange of techniques and bodily expressions in liberty that pretended to call karate, they didn't succeed in recognizing the karate transmitted by the M.G.  Funakoshi anymore, and from the great teachers of the past.

Therefore, seen difficulties above exposed, how to do to theoretically and concretely connect to the tradition ?

We know that with the term Tradition is defined the action to transmit something from person to person and that in it is imperative the assignment to preserve more faithfully possible what it has been transmitted, with the appointment eventually to improve and to improve it.

Then the solution was simple, all necessary it is to follow the principles that the martial art defines, and to act in a way that these principles were also rigorously respects in the competitive demonstrations.

Worldwide there are two organizations that discipline the karate: the ITKF (International Traditional Karate Federation, represented in Italy by the FIKTA) and the FMK/WKF (ex-WUKO).

From a side the ITKF respects and maintains the ethical, technical, philosophical and spiritual principles of the tradition and that constitute the base of their own discipline and technique that generations of teachers and apprentices have transmitted and handed down up to our days.

On the other side the "Modern Karate" as currently practised by the FMK/WKF (ex-WUKO) it is the direct consequence of the technical choice happened in 1982. In fact in 1982 the Wuko was equipped with a rule of competition, still valid, that modifying the principles on which the Traditional Karate founds itself, it turns it into a sport in which essentially made by use of punch and kicks.

The problem has also been submitted to the study of the Committee of the International Olympic Committee: the C.I.O, that in the 101° Session of Montecarlo, September 1993, it clearly established that the traditional karate is the direct karate and disciplined by the ITKF.

We have therefore from a side the traditional karate ITKF that is rigorously founded on the concept of Todome and Finishing blow or "final technique” it means a single technique, with the use of the body, and without use of weapons or utensils, it has to be able to destroy the offensive ability of the adversary; and from the other the "modern Karate" FMK/WKF (ex-WUKO), that, according to its own rule of competition, admits actions of kick and punch that don't have requisition of any finishing blow.

The techniques are described as "vigorous actions", and therefore don't ask for some technique trained in special way.

As resulted, whatever sporting discipline or art of fight you/he/she can participate in such competitions, because for some specific technical competence is not asked.
